Personal Finance and Computer Literacy

Class Structure and Content

  1. September until Winter Break will consist of computer based activities.
    1. The software skills taught will be Word andExcel
      1. Documentformatting and processing will include:
        1. Outlines
        2. Tables
        3. MLA style reports
        4. Mail Merge
    2. Spreadsheet techniques will include:
      1. Formatting, spreadsheet navigation
      2. Formulas, functions
      3. Charts
    3. Businessmath applications
      1. Use of percentages
      2. Calculating gross pay, net pay
      3. Calculating interest and payments
      4. January to June will consist of topics inPersonal Finance and Career Planning; activities will include lecture, notetaking, tests, and computer activities in support of Personal Finance topics.
        1. Personal Finance topics taught will include
          1. BasicEconomic Principles
          2. BankingProcedures and Services
          3. Methodsof Saving
          4. Methodsof Investing
          5. Planningfor the Future
          6. Credit
          7. Loans
          8. Credit Cards
          9. Taxes
          10. Insurance
          11. Budgets
  2. Career topics will include:
    1. Self assessment (interests, skills, abilities, learning styles)
    2. Career Exploration
    3. Career Plan

Class Policies and Procedures

  1. Students will have assigned seats in the middle ofthe room and at the computer
  2. Students will assemble in the middle of the classroom at the beginning of each period and wait for instruction
  3. No food or drinks in the classroom
  4. NO GAMES ARE TO BE PLAYED ON THE COMPUTER. If a student is playing games he/she will be told to log off for the remainder of the period and sit in the middle.
  5. No use of cell phones, IPods or earphones of anykind. If a student uses these in class they will be confiscated and given to the office.
  6. Students will not be assigned a text book but will take notes in a detailed study guide on which all tests will be based.

Grading

  • Classroom exercises -- 5-10 points
  • Computer Quizzes – 20
  • Tests – 30 points
  • Projects – 40 points

**There will be a midterm given over two days in December based on Word and Excel Techniques and a Final Exam based on Personal Finance Topics given in June.**

THIS COURSE IS A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT OF RIVERSIDE HIGH SCHOOL AND THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY. IN ORDER TO GRADUATE A STUDENT MUST PASS PERSONAL FINANCE AND COMPUTER LITERACY.
